The Strict Regulation of Idaho Health Insurance

I daho health insurance companies are strictly regulated by the state government in order to provide balanced protection to both the Idaho health insurance policyholders and their insurance companies. By regulating Idaho health insurance policy guidelines, Idaho health insurance customers can rest assured that different Idaho health insurance companies are all following the same basic laws when it comes to applying, issuing, renewing and canceling Idaho health insurance policies.

One aspect of Idaho health insurance law that is different from most other states is that when you apply for an Idaho health insurance policy you are guaranteed the choice between three different types of coverage. Idaho health insurance companies must offer basic, standard and catastrophic policy choices to Idaho health insurance applicants. This variety of coverage gives the applicant more choices regarding the amount of coverage he or she needs, and also the amount that his or her Idaho health insurance premium will be.

Idaho health insurance companies can deny a policy application based on a person’s health or age. If an Idaho health insurance application has been denied because of health reasons, he or she can try the Idaho Individual High Risk Reinsurance Pool. This Idaho health insurance group was put in place to help high-risk individuals find affordable Idaho health insurance coverage. The Reinsurance Pool makes pre-existing condition exceptions that are not typically made by other Idaho health insurance companies.

In Idaho health insurance law, pre-existing condition exclusion periods are limited to twelve months. This means that an Idaho health insurance company can deny payment on a claim that involved treatment of an illness that was diagnosed prior to receiving a new Idaho health insurance policy. However, the Idaho health insurance company must pay for new claims made after the one-year exclusion period. Idaho health insurance regulations state that pre-existing conditions are limited to illnesses that were treated up to six months prior to the establishment of the new Idaho health insurance policy.

Idaho health insurance companies’ premium rates are based on an individual’s health, age and smoker status. Idaho health insurance will also consider your place of residence, the number of people in your family and your gender when calculating your Idaho health insurance monthly premium. Unlike in most states, Idaho health insurance companies do not have to guarantee renew ability of individuals’ policies. This means that an Idaho health insurance policyholder can be dropped at the end of a term if renew ability is not written into the individual’s Idaho health insurance contract. Renew ability is one of the most important aspects to consider before deciding on an Idaho health insurance policy.

Because renew ability is not guaranteed in Idaho health insurance law, the Idaho Individual High Risk Reinsurance Pool is in place to help individuals who either cannot afford offered premiums or who have been denied policies by several Idaho health insurance companies. Reinsurance Pool members are charged higher premiums than healthy persons would be, but these Idaho health insurance premiums are lower than non-standardized premiums charged by private Idaho health insurance companies who do not participate in the Pool program.
